How this is estimated: the annual and monthly figures assume you work this same weekly pattern of unsocial hours all year round, before accounting for annual leave — treat them as an upper estimate, not a guarantee. Weekly figures are the most reliable part of this calculation.

How NHS Unsocial Hours Enhancements Work

Saturday: hours worked on a Saturday attract an enhancement of time plus 30% on top of your basic hourly rate.

Sunday: hours worked on a Sunday attract an enhancement of time plus 60% on top of your basic hourly rate.

Weekday nights: hours worked between 8pm and 6am on a weekday attract an enhancement of time plus 30% on top of your basic hourly rate.

These enhancements are paid on top of your basic Agenda for Change salary for the specific hours worked in those periods — they don't replace your normal pay. Enhancements are also pensionable, meaning they count towards your NHS pension contributions and benefits, and they're taxed and NI'd in the normal way alongside the rest of your income. Frequently Asked Questions

How is my hourly rate worked out? This tool divides your annual gross salary by 52.143 weeks and then by your contracted weekly hours (37.5 by default) to get your basic hourly rate, which is then used to calculate each enhancement.

Does this include bank holidays or on-call pay? No. Bank holiday and on-call arrangements vary and aren't covered by this calculator — use the "Custom Salary" option on our main calculator if you want to model additional known payments.

Is the annual figure exact? No — it's an estimate that assumes your unsocial hours pattern repeats every week of the year, which doesn't account for annual leave, sickness, or rota changes. Treat it as an upper estimate.
